The subject of unclean spirits is a reality in the Scriptures. Who and what are they? Where are they? Where do they come from? What do they do? The word of God provides us with answers to all of these questions. Evil spirits, also called demons, are ‘spirits’ (Matt. 8:16), and they are referred to as unclean spirits (Mark 9:25). They are under the authority of Satan (Luke 11:15-19), although they are subject to God in the final analysis (Matt. 8:29). They do not only cause illness (Matt. 9:32, 33; Mark 9:18), but they also obstruct the work of the Lord by means of corrupt and false doctrines (1 Tim. 4:1-3), which they spread amongst believers who lack wisdom (Jas. 3:13-16). The term ‘demons’ was incorrectly translated in the Bible as ‘devils’. There is only one devil, namely Satan, but there are many demons.
