The first person to whom the promise of the new Jerusalem was made, was Abraham, the father of believers (Heb. 11:9, 10). Two thousand years before the birth of Jesus Christ, Abraham left his fatherland, Ur of the Chaldees, to search for a city with foundations of which God was the master builder and constructor. Abraham did not reach this promised city on earth. His life remained a process of faith; he never enjoyed the fulfillment of finally beholding and entering that city during his earthly life. Since the time of Abraham that city would be some five thousand years in the future. Two thousand years passed from the time of Abraham to the time of Christ, and another two thousand years passed from the time of Christ till present time. Then there are still a thousand years to come in Christ’s millennium kingdom of peace until the moment in time when the earth shall be changed in a conflagration of fire. Consequently this adds up to a total of at least five thousand years from Abraham to Revelation 21:1, 2.
